Biography

Nicholas Coleman is the son of wildlife artist Michael Coleman and has been greatly influenced by his father, who encouraged him to paint as a child. The artist described his style as realistic with an impressionistic feel. He doesn't mind being compared to his father whom he admires and knows that with time he will develop his own style and subject matter. Nicholas Coleman is an outdoors-man and a natural history enthusiast; both interests play an important role in his art. Coleman uses a traditional academic approach in his painting, using gouache and oil. However, he doesn’t like to label his style as “realism,” as there is a certain amount of spontaneity and a slight impressionistic feel to his paintings. Coleman endeavors to create a connection between his paintings and the observer by invoking a mood that the viewer can walk into.
